About

I am a third-year PhD student in the School of Philosophy at Birkbeck College, University of London. In Hilary term 2010 I will be a recognised (i.e. visiting) student at Oxford working with John Hyman. My research is supported by a PhD studentship from the British Society of Aesthetics.

In my thesis I clarify and defend the claim that photographs are causal representations whilst paintings are intentional ones. I go on to illustrate various ways in which photography's causal basis subtends its peculiar epistemic and aesthetic values. Portions of my thesis have been published in the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism and Ratio (see papers on the left).

I edit the British Society of Aesthetics' website, co-organise the London Aesthetics Forum and edit the PhilPapers.org category 'Photography'.
